Tenchi the Movie 2
The Daughter of Darkness

Oh yes, another Tenchi review
by yours truly. This movie had a lot of good and bad about it. The bad
isn’t really about the movie itself, but about the universe overall. Anyway,
onto the real review. Story wise, this movie almost makes no real sense…
as to why the fact Yuzuha really wants to cause trouble… I mean, it DOES
make sense but overall I guess it doesn’t. But the story itself is very
well told. Apparently, Yosho, Tenchi’s Grandpa and Jurian Prince, likes
to get freaky with demons… because Yuzuha has a thing for him. Actually,
she was in love with him, one of the “Light” and her being of the “Dark”
it’s really forbidden… and she feels he betrayed her, so she’s getting
back at his grandson Tenchi by making a “daughter” out of his DNA and hers.
It’s a sick twisted plot that explodes in her face. Mayuka, Tenchi’s daughter,
stays with him and the girls, causing a tad bit of trouble, but bringing
in new warmth and happiness. She’s supposed to persuade Tenchi to the side
of Darkness but what you have to remember is Tenchi is Jurian and he is
also a loving, caring individual… Mayuka, who harbors more of her father’s
traits than anyone can really know, ends up, in the end, fighting Tenchi
and Ryoko in the world of Darkness, where only Ryoko’s powers work. Sasami,
who was kidnapped there, brings her out of the trance however, and Mayuka
attacks her mother, only to be killed. That was the saddest part and I
cried when that happened. But, well, Ayeka, using Tsunami’s power, gets
Tenchi his Jurian energy and Tenchi slays Yuzuha, who only really wanted
to be loved… but it’s not over. Mayuka comes back as a baby.. a little
child, to be raised by the household. What pisses me off is that this was
never played up in any of the other releases… sad really, considering I
loved Mayuka a lot (second to Ryoko and Sasami). So the story was excellent.
Animation wise, like all Tenchi’s that are dramatic, the animation of this
was EXCELLENT. I have the DVD version, so it was very crisp, very clear,
and very awesome! The girls always (no not sexually either, which is GOOD)
move with a bounce and that was played up quite a bit. I always find the
color to Tenchi also crisp but it was obvious that computer coloring was
used in this. The music was decent. I mean, there’s only, maybe, three
memorable tracks during the entire course of the movie (when Mayuka comes,
the Startica Parade, and the ending music) but those make a well rounded
bunch that you WILL remember no matter what. The voices, like all previous
Tenchi’s are on par with what they are supposed to sound like. Because
I’ve seen and listened to it three ways, I can tell you that the English
voices are far better than the Japanese. That’s just my opinion though,
so don’t think that you shouldn’t look at it subbed. The Dubbing is also
very good, because nothing is off sync at all. I found that great. Overall,
this movie is good. Not a must see, but at least a good two day rental
if you just want to see some new anime. All Tenchi fans, however, are to
buy it. NOW!
