| Set 4 to 5 years after Armitage
III, Armitage and Ross live with their daughter Yoko on Mars. Both Armitage
and Ross were believed to have been killed by the military in the events
at the end of Armitage III, to aid in this belief they have changed their
names so that they can live a normal peaceful life. When Armitage learns
of the destruction of more ‘third types’ on Earth which is being covered
up by saying it was a rebellion by conventional robots at a anti matter
factory, she heads to earth to investigate. When the businessman behind
this incident finds out about Armitage’s survival he tries to capture her
so he can learn the secret of the third types. When he fails to capture
her he then goes after Yoko in an attempt to blackmail Armitage into helping
him. When this plan fails, he then sends 2 replicas of Armitage after Armitage,
Ross and Yoko and a rather lengthy fight begins as they try to escape the
replicas. During the fight with the replicas, Armitage has to face just
what it means to be a ‘third type’ once more and what this means to the
relationship between herself and her daughter Yoko.
The animation is nicely done, with first class conventional animation and good use of 3D CG animation during several parts, the longest being the car chase sequence. The show has excellent 5.1 stereo tracks in both Japanese and English. The music suits the show nicely and is an excellent sounding techno mix similar to that in Armitage III, a reason for this being that according to the extras on the disc the music was actually composed to be recorded for a 5.1 mix. It would be an advantage to have seen Armitage III before seeing this movie to make sense of the initial part of the movie. However it is still an excellent movie on its own, I learnt enough from the DVD case insert to not feel totally lost whilst trying to work out what had happened beforehand. Armitgae Dual Matrix is a rather enjoyable sci-fi anime with a good mixture of action and emotional moments. Story: 7/7
