| A column of light shoots
up into the sky and a power blackout hits the surrounding city, soon afterwards
a number of high school students in the city develop strange powers. These
students then start to disappear, and the rumours say that a mysterious
figure named Boogiepop is behind the disappearances.
This show is similar in some aspects to Serial Experiments Lain, but it is much more complex than Lain as it follows multiple characters and has storylines of varying importance which make up the overall story. To make it even more potentially confusing the show is extremely non linear as it jumps around within the timeline of the series between episodes and even changes within individual episodes. Several scenes appear more than once, but they are shown slightly differently as they are shown in the context of the story of the main character of that episode. The video style used is interesting with the colours used subdued and sepia toned, the only episode that appears in full colour is the last episode. It is also a very dark show with much of it occurring at night, this style nicely helps set the atmosphere of the series. The series has an excellent sounding Japanese 2.0 stereo track. The English 5.1 stereo track also sounds very good and uses the extra speakers nicely, especially with some of the more unusual sound and music effects. The music suits the atmosphere of the series nicely, varying from monks chanting to almost random musical notes. This is a series which you have to watch very closely to have any chance of really following the story. It may not start to really make sense until at least the second viewing due to all the subtle plot points, especially if the discs are viewed some time apart. It certainly lends itself to a marathon viewing session off all 12 episodes at once. This is definitely a series to watch if you like to watch anime that is a little unusual and requires you to pay close attention to the story. Story:
