Anime is a style of animation which originates from Japan.  This is how it gets its other name Japanimation.  Anime is unlike anything you have ever seen, while at a glimpse it resembles nothing more than childrens Saturday morning cartoons, but if you take another look you will see it is in most cases exactly the opposite.  While there is some anime that is light hearted there is also anime with a hard edge that is appealing to a more adult audience.  In Japan some anime movie releases can be as large an event as Star Wars Episode I is here in the States.  Anime is brought to the states through a large number of distributors who have dubbed and subbed versions of titles.  The dubbed versions are of course in English while the subtitled versions are in there original Japanese language with English subtitles.  I myself was introduced to anime while watching a series called "Robotech" which is still one of my all time favorite series.  This series originated from a series in Japan called "Macross" and was also melded together with two other series from japan.  It was then that I discovered just how large Japanimation was and how much there was out there to see.  While everything that comes out in Japan is not yet released here in the states there is still plenty of anime here to see.  Some suggestions to get you started can range from "Tenchi Muyo", "Neon Genesis Evangelion", "El Hazard" and "Macross" just to name a few.  These are all series that I enjoyed immensely and believe most anime lovers would agree in saying they represent some of the best Japan has to offer.
